How to Join

Q:  What do I have to do to become a member of Linglestown Life?

A:  Linglestown Life doesn't think in terms of membership, but in terms of discipleship.  We're convinced it's more important to become a disciple to serve Jesus as Lord than it is to have your name on a membership roll of a church.  Membership implies privileges: discipleship implies service.  We at Linglestown Life are intent on serving Jesus as Lord, and to giving witness to His love.  For this reason we don't speak about joining the church, but about uniting with Linglestown Life as a disciple of Jesus Christ.  If you are interested in becoming a Disciple at Linglestown Life, you can find a more detailed description of how we understand this and the Exploring Discipleship Class under the Ministries tab, then select "Discipleship."

Q:  Whom do I tell that I'm interested in uniting with Linglestown Life?

A:  There are multiple ways to communicate your interest.  One way is to check the appropriate statement on the reverse side of the  Registration Card located in the weekly bulletins.  Be sure to include your name, phone number, and email (if available).

A second way to register your interest is to phone the church office at 545-5200.  Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM till 4:30 PM.  The office is closed daily for lunch between 12 noon and 1:00 PM.  An electronic answering device will record your message over the lunch hour or after hours.

A final way is to get in touch with Pastor Adam Estep.  You can reach him via email at aestep@linglestownlife.org.

Q:  I've never belonged to a church before.  Are there any pre-requisites?

A:  First and foremost you need to profess Jesus as Savior and Lord.  Secondly, you need to be baptized.  Both these concepts are explained and explored more fully when you enroll in one or our Exploring Discipleship Classes.  If you'd like to speak privately about these with either Pastor George or Pastor Adam, please feel free to contact them by calling the church office or by sending them an email.

Q:  What is the Exploring Discipleship Class?

A:  The Exploring Discipleship Class is required of all who seek to become a Disciple at Linglestown Life.  It lasts about 6-8 weeks depending on whether the class meets on Sunday morning, which needs more weeks, or meets during the week, which meets less weeks.  A more detailed description is located under the Ministries tab, select "Discipleship."

Q:  I've been baptized.  Do I need to be baptized again to unite with Linglestown Life?

A:  Certainly not. As a United Methodist Church, Linglestown Life recognizes the sacrament of baptism as administered by all Christian churches.

Q:  I'm currently a member of another church.  Can I transfer my membership?

A:  Most Definitely.  Linglestown Life recognizes and honors your previous profession of faith.  Our church office is able to complete all necessary paperwork to effect your transfer.  However, all persons having a desire to become a disciple and unite with Linglestown Life are required to enroll in our Exploring Discipleship Class.  This applies both to persons who have never belonged to a church, as well as those who are transferring.  Each church is different in varying degrees, and we want to make sure all those interested in joining understand who we are at Linglestown Life, where we have been, and where we feel God is calling us towards.

Q:  What are the expectations of becoming a Disciple at Linglestown Life?

A:  The expectations of being a disciple are explored and discussed more fully in the Exploring Discipleship Class.  Briefly stated, disciples are expected to be intentional about - and accountable for - regular attendance, personal spiritual growth, deploying your gifts and graces in mission and ministry, giving financially, and witnessing about the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Q:  I still have some questions.  To whom do I speak?

A:  Phone the church office and indicate your interest in possibly becoming a disciple at Linglestown Life.  Express your interest in speaking with someone to discuss certain questions you have and a knowledgeable leader from the church will return your call within a few days.
